When Service Demands a Sacrifice

Today, the universe placed us in a position of service that challenged our integrity, empathy, and endurance.
Originally slated for an air conditioned space inside one of the shelters, we were informed that we would no longer be able to use that area. We exited the building with grace and helped pack up the items that had already been set out.
At that point, Rosalind of Helping Hands, Open Hearts apologized for the scheduling snafu and gave us the opportunity to call our service complete through no fault of our own.
Our integrity said, “No. We are here to serve. Where do you need us next?”
Our next stop was near one of the shelters. When we arrived, multiple organizations were already on the ground canvassing the area. Again, we were given the option to simply walk away. No harm. No foul.
Our empathy would not allow us to leave.
These ladies were determined to fulfill their commitment to the community, and so were we.
We finally landed at a church’s soup kitchen, where we were welcomed with open arms. Our service immediately kicked into action as we set up seven tables filled with snack bags, hydration supplies, hygiene kits, socks, underwear, shoes, clothing, and a selection of Father’s Day gifts.
Our pledges, supported by the brothers of ONYX Lone Star, endured multiple pivots in location and personal comfort to extend dignity and grace to those in need today.
As President of ONYX Lone Star, I extend my heartfelt thanks to our Divergent Pledge Line for executing an exemplary community service project. The tenacity of your efforts makes the future of this organization look bright.
Thank you to Helping Hands, Open Hearts for your dedication to the unhoused members of our community. Your steadfast compassion enriches the very fabric of humanity. We are humbled to have had the opportunity to serve alongside you today.
Service is easy when it is convenient.
Character is revealed when it is not.
When service demands a sacrifice, we stand strong in our dedication and answer the call to serve.
